SCV Members Have Questions, But CIC Wilson Has Trouble Providing Answers
Questions become numerous as each one is answered only by silence from the SCV's national leader

Dear Commander-in-Chief Wilson:

The Sons of Confederate Veterans membership wants answers to the following questions:

  • Whose idea was it to link the SCV to Kirk Lyons and his Southern Legal Resource Center’s (SLRC) sponsorship of H. K. Edgerton's march across Dixie, whereby 75% of the proceeds would go to the SLRC and only 25% to the SCV Heritage Defense Fund?

  • You have implied that you withdrew from the Council of Conservative Citizens (CCC) and the League of the South (LoS) due to some vague sense of "discomfort" with those organizations. Nonetheless, you have appointed CCC and LoS members to prominent positions in the SCV. Why shouldn’t the SCV membership feel the same "discomfort" concerning your appointments?

  • You have taken responsibility for initiating a program of "field representatives" in the SCV. One such field rep is Jack Marlar. Mr. Marlar has been visiting various camps in North and South Carolina and spreading anti Save the Sons of Confederate Veterans messages. He is also asking Camp Commanders to identify their financially well-to-do camp members. Are these camp members being targeted to donate to some special project? If so, what is that project and why should our members be subjected to this "squeeze" tactic? Also, who is the anonymous benefactor that is funding the field representative program?

  • Given that your daughter works for Kirk Lyons and the SLRC, given that you endorsed Kirk Lyons’ candidacy for ANV. Commander, and given that you are a past director of the SLRC, have you abstained from all votes involving hiring the SLRC as a law firm for the SCV in order to avoid conflict of interests?

  • How much money has the SCV General Executive Council (GEC) paid out to Kirk Lyons and/or the SLRC during your administration?

  • When compared to payments for legal services made to Kirk Lyons and the SLRC, how much money has the GEC given to battlefield preservation and monument construction projects during your administration?

  • Will you make public to the SCV membership, a case by case accounting of all heritage defense cases handled by Kirk Lyons and his SLRC for which the SCV has made payment along with the amounts of those payments?

  • Will you also make notification to the SCV membership the number of heritage defense cases handled by any other law firm, group or individual for which the SCV has made payment?

  • The SCV merchandise catalog lists the book, "Shakedown", an expose’ on Jesse Jackson. How does selling this book guard the honor of the Confederate soldier and his good name? Who is responsible for selecting SCV merchandise? What are the criteria? Shouldn't all SCV merchandise reflect the purpose and mission of the SCV: to protect, defend and promote the honor the Confederate soldier in a positive and pro-active way?

  • There has been no mention of the disgraceful disruption during the Oratory Contest at Memphis in the Confederate Veteran or in any other official SCV publication. Is the SCV "sanitizing" its own historical record?

  • Have you directed the Inspector General to review the video of the Oratory Contest in order to identify those responsible for the disturbance? When the offenders are identified, will you recommend disciplinary action?

  • Do you believe that the Memphis Resolution is as legal and binding as the provisions of our SCV constitution?

  • Do you believe that the Memphis Resolution is enforceable against all SCV members or just those members who support Save the SCV?

  • Have you directed the Inspector General to enforce the Memphis Resolution against any of your supporters for their public Internet attacks on Charles Hawks, Gilbert Jones and others?

  • Are you aware that the Memphis Resolution prohibits criticism by SCV members on other members in "any public forum", and that the world-wide-web has been legally defined as a "public" forum?

  • How much of the SCV’s assets are you willing to spend in an effort to enforce the Memphis Resolution?

  • Does the SCV have insurance to cover the GEC members in the event of legal action resulting from any attempted enforcement of the Memphis Resolution?

  • Why is there no accounting of Heritage Defense spending available to members covering the period prior to March 2001?

  • Why do some individual SCV members collect donations, using SCV logos as advertising, then send the proceeds directly to Kirk Lyons at SLRC without formally reporting such activities to the SCV?

  • Does the Heritage Defense Fund ask groups to whom funds are distributed for an accounting of how those funds were actually spent?

  • Other than personnel decisions involving Headquarters Staff, what could be discussed at a GEC meeting that is so secret that members cannot be allowed to know it?

  • On November 16, you met with Charles Hawks and suspended him. As of January 20, he still had not been notified of the charges against him. Why a two month delay in due process?

  • During your campaign, you pledged to take action against some SCV members. To date, no one has been expelled or censured except Save the SCV activists. Are you waiting for specific camps to submit their dues before attempting to revoke their charters?

  • Two veteran North Carolina SCV leaders, Lewis Lawrence and Larry Walker, have been relieved as Division Chief of Staff and Division Historian, respectively, by N.C. Division Commander Brian Carawan. Neither man was given any reason for his dismissal from office. Both men are publicly supporting Save the SCV. Can all Save the SCV supporters look forward to being fired from positions that they now hold?

  • Did you order Commander Carawan to relieve Walker and Lawrence from office in order to deprive Save the SCV of two votes at the upcoming N.C. Executive Council meeting?
